The Russian XIX century is significant for us at least at least in that it was at this time - in disputes and conversations, in mutual understanding or misunderstanding - that social language and the system of images and ideas that we, freely or involuntarily, were developed. Fortunately or to the detriment of ourselves, we continue to use to this day. A series of essays and notes presented in this book reveals some of the key plots of Russian intellectual history of that time related to the question of the place and the appointment of Russia, that is, about its possible future, conceivable through the past.

People of different philosophical and political views, different origin and status, of different fate - all of them were directly or in absentia and remain participants in the ongoing Russian conversation.
