The most famous scientist, academician Sergei Mikhailovich Soloviev (1820–1879) wrote a multi -volume “History of Russia since ancient times”, in which he spoke about the main people and events related to Russian land, about the life and morals of generations, about kings and subjects. The multi -volume work of S. M. Solovyov was recognized as the classics of domestic historiography.

The current edition presents selected chapters, giving an idea of ​​the history of Russia in an era that begins with the reign of Fedor Alekseevich to a period of transformations during the first Turkish war under Catherine II. In particular, the book describes the process of the formation of the empire under Peter I.

The final lines of this titanic essay were written by the author’s hand that had already weakened from a dying illness. He wanted to finish the final volume of Pugachev, but death was interrupted by the long -term work of the historian who thought about him and in the last minutes of his active life.
