Sakhalin island. Essays. Travel notes. Chekhov A.P.
In 1890, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, in a fit of civilian feeling and wanting to break out of a bored life, went to Sakhalin, where convicts were exiled in those days.
as a result of a three -month trip, the book of the same name was born in the light, in which included both notes about the weather, the flora, fauna and legends of the island, as well as the uncompromising description of the terrible prisoner’s life.
The book made such a great resonance in society that the main prison administration and the Ministry of Justice sent a special commission to Sakhalin, which confirmed the veracity of the writer's words and initiated transformations in the field of exile and hard labor in the Russian Empire of the late 19th century.
This publication also includes essays “From Siberia” and stories affecting criminal and judicial topics.
