Leningrad schoolgirl Lena Mukhina began keeping a diary in May 1941, not assuming that very soon the records in this small notebook would be destined to turn from a chronicle of youthful love in a chronicle of one of the most terrible catastrophes in the history of mankind and become part of a dramatic collective text under The name "Blocade Diaries".

What can be opposed to painful dying of hunger in conditions when the generally accepted moral standards collapse? What can save from spiritual degradation in conditions when the struggle for survival deprives the “human face”, and the hunger and fear of death turn a person into an animal? One of the means of salvation was the ordering of the letters. An attempt to comprehend what is happening through a word, understand yourself. And one more thing: intuitive knowledge that you need to maintain your story, your experience is for others.

Today, when more and more blockade diaries are deciphered and published, we understand how great the enduring value of these documentary evidence of the tragic era is. Like Anna Frank's diary, the diary of Lena Mukhina can rightfully be ranked by a number of the most dramatic and most piercing works of the 20th century.
