The epic novel in two parts of the famous Soviet and Russian writer Yuri Sergeyevich Rytheu (1930-2008) tells about the fate of the Canadian sailor John Mclennan, a former assistant captain of a trade vessel, wiped in the ice of Bering the Strait in 1911. He found a second homeland on Chukotka and among the small people who lost in the snow of the people found true friends: Chukchi, Eskimos, Russians, with whom he includes in the construction of a new life. He is chosen by the chairman of the native council of the village of Enmyn, and he writes a petition addressed to the chairman of the CEC V.I. Lenin on the provision of Soviet citizenship.
