According to contemporaries, Ivan Shmelev became “the most Russian” of the emigrant writers who pronounced the whole “deep truth” about Russia, creating it cleared of accidents, a beautiful and bright image, spiritualized by higher meaning and faith. Having gone beyond the scope of national literature, the work of Shmelev gained universal significance; His works received European fame and were translated into dozens of languages. The writer twice was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature.
