Henry Longfello (1807-1882) - a brilliant American poet, awarded glory during his lifetime. Its popularity in America was so high that mourning was declared in the country on Longfello's death. He was considered a singer of national culture, he presented his compatriots “Divine Comedy”, translating Dante's immortal creation into English. “Song about Gayavat” is no doubt the best work of Longfello. The hero of the poem - the Indian leader of Gayavat, capable of hearing the “voices of nature” - an example of amazing courage and nobility. “A man of miraculous origin”, known among different tribes under different names, was sent, as Longfello wrote, “to clear their rivers, forests and fishing places and teach peoples to peaceful arts.” In the "Songs of Gayavat" Longfello resurches the past of America, drawing inspiration in folk tales and legends. An epic poem is published in the unsurpassed translation of the great Russian poet and prose writer Ivan Bunin.
