Sotnikov - the name of the protagonist, carried out in the title of the story, although the author originally planned to name the work "Liquidation". Through the identity of the protagonist, the author shows the heroism of Soviet soldiers and officers, the tragedy of captivity, partisan life and fatal circumstances of death - the liquidation of Sotnikov.

“Obelisk” - continues the story about the partisans of Belarus and the heroism of ordinary people - the school teacher and his students. As in "Sotnikov" the main character voluntarily goes to death, hoping to save his students.

both novels were filmed in the Soviet Union, Vasil Bykov was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1974 for the story "Obelisk", and In 2013, the story “Sotnikov” was included in the list of books recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
