Dmitry Ilyich Petrov-Biryuk entered Soviet literature as the author of a number of historical novels. His works are devoted to the most important and turning point in the history of the Don Cossacks, with which the whole life of the writer is associated. The novel "South in the Fire" talks about the defeat of Denikin in the south of Russia.

The basis of the novel is the fate of the two brothers, one of whom serves in the White Army, and the other in the 1st horseback of Budyonny.
