These memoirs, which have long been included in the "Golden Fund" of German memoirs about the war on the Eastern Front, the real confession of the Wehrmacht officer. Colonel Lutpold Steidle (1898–1984) fought against the Red Army from June 22, 1941 and until surrender near Stalingrad, where he commanded the 767th Grenadier Regiment of the 376th Infantry Division. In his book, in all details, he talks about the invasion of the USSR, the most difficult battles of 1941-1942, about the cruel battle for Stalingrad, about how the ring of the encirclement closed around the Paulus army and how German troops were painfully “cooked” in the Stalingrad “boiler”.
