Gaito Gazdanov (1903–1971) is one of the most interesting writers of Russian abroad. After the revolution, Gazdanov joined the white movement and later was forced to leave his homeland forever, sharing the fate of many Russian emigrants. Most of his life spent in Paris; For many years he worked as a night taxi driver, since 1953 he was a correspondent, and then the Radio Liberty editor. Fame came to Gazdanov after the publication of his first novel “Evening at Claire” (1929), which became a significant event in literary life, the doors of leading emigrant magazines opened in front of a young author. By the power of talent, contemporaries put him on a par with Vladimir Nabokov and compared with Marcel Prust and Ivan Bunin.
