Dostoevsky’s genius is truly universal - in his “small” works, as in great novels, he acts as a subtle psychologist, and an attentive observer, and a talented satirist. His “Uncle Dream”, “Mr. Prokharchin” and “Honest Thief”, in which they were not once seen by roll call with Gogol, were performed by bitter irony, and the life of the deep province and the St. Petersburg “bottom” forced the reader to laugh at the shortcomings of the heroes and empathize with them.

It was in the early stories and stories that Dostoevsky began to develop the most important philosophical and moral topics, which will later be developed in “Crime and Punishment”, “Besses” and “Brothers Karamazov”.
