Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky is one of the most popular Russian playwrights, whose work had a huge impact on the development of the domestic theater: ordinary people (merchants, officials, young hangs, girls for giving way), living, aspirations and passions, loved ones, entered the stage. And understandable viewers at all times. The playwright created almost fifty plays that revealed the Russian national character in its entirety.

The publication included such famous plays as “Your people - we consider it!”, “Poverty is not a vice”, “Thunderstorm”, “Unprotanted”, “Snegurochka”, which to this day do not leave the stage. Ostrovsky’s works attract not only theatrical and filmmakers, but also illustrator artists who seek to realize Ostrovsky’s stories on books, to convey the characteristic features of his characters. Many famous artists turned to the solution of this difficult task, including P. M. Boklevsky, B. M. Kustodiev, V. M. Vasnetsov.

The illustrations of these and other artists of the XIX - early twentieth centuries are included in the book.
