Georgy Markov is one of the most famous Soviet writers, for many years he headed the Union of Writers of the USSR. Siberian, the son of a hunter, Markov knew the peasant life well. Already the first novel - “Strict” (1939–1946) - brought fame to the author. Having taken the story of one family as the basis of the plot, G. Markov described the events that took place in his native land from the Russian-Japanese to the civil war. The continuation of this story was the novel “The Salt of the Earth” (1954–1960), where the fate of the children and grandchildren of Matvey Strogov, engaged in the transformation of post -war Siberia, is traced.
