Tales and parables. Stevenson R.L.
Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote the famous story about Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Haid in 1886. By that time, he was already the author of Treasure Islands - a novel that brought him world fame. The new masterpiece of the writer was a vivid example of the genre of nascent science fiction. The success of this story was incredible - it was printed immediately in the old and in the new light. The other works of Stevenson, included in this collection: “Suicide Club”, “Diamond Raji”, “The Briefing of John Nicholson” are no less interesting. The first literary experiences of Stevenson were travel notes that he began to write by receiving a legal education.
Really Stevenson's talent revealed when he settled for adventure novels. Their adventurous plots, a deep knowledge of the history of England and his native Scotland, in conjunction with the subtle psychological study of the characters, made these works a fascinating reading.
However, the fate of Stevenson could have developed differently. The father of the future writer was an engineer. He wanted his son to become a specialist in the design of lighthouses, and Robert began to receive engineering education at the University of Edinburgh. In 1871, when the young man was only 21 years old, he even received a silver medal for the development of a new design for lighthouse flashing fire. However, at about the same time, Robert fell in love with a pretty singer from a night cabaret and wanted to marry her. Father was categorically against. This disagreement forced Robert to quit engineering, acquire a lawyer’s profession and take up a pen.
Stevenson since childhood was not very good. Doctors suspected his pulmonary tuberculosis. In search of a more suitable climate for himself, the already famous writer on the yacht acquired by him made a long sea cruise along the seas of Southeast Asia with his family and the donkey ultimately on the man-ears, one of the islands of Samoa. There, in his wooden house, on December 3, 1894, at the age of only 44 years, he suddenly died of a stroke.
This collection with the stories of the writer is decorated with expressive drawings of several British artists. Among them are the famous British illustrator of the late XIX-early XX centuries, Edmund Joseph Sullivan, a famous American artist who received the Pulitzer Prize at the beginning of the 20th century, Charles Makoli, as well as an honorary member of the American Society of Warelist Artists Ulyam Hennesi. It is especially worth paying attention to the illustrations in the style of modern to the short fairy tales of Stevenson. They were performed by E.R. Herman in 1914.
