Taras Bulba
The collection entitled by Gogol Mirgorod included four novels based on Ukrainian folklore. “Old Svetsky landowners” is a sad love story of the two spouses, love, beyond the borders of which the heroes no longer see the world around him. “Taras Bulba” is nothing similar to the previous story about the life of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, where the fighting spirit, thirst for military glory and love reign, is stronger than the duty to the homeland and to the father. The third story is “Viy” - a chilling story about the dark forces of the underworld, in a terrible battle with which, succumbing to fear, the seminarist dies. And, finally, the “The Tale of how Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich” is a humorous sketch from the life of the town of Mirgorod, it seems that there is never an aging story about how suddenly bosom friends quarrel. A striking example of how trifling can turn out not just by hostility and trial, but almost the meaning of all life.
