Telescope in the ice. Bowen M.
In the summer of 2018, it became known about the most important discovery: the Antarctic telescope “Ice Cube” registered the neutrino of high energy - that is, a particle that arose not in the atmosphere of the Earth, but that flew, most likely, from the distant space. Neutrino can tell a lot about the structure of the universe, but these particles are extremely difficult to catch. It was to solve this problem at the South Pole for several decades that a grand neutrine telescope was built: in the purest Antarctic ice at a depth of one and a half to two kilometers, threads with sensitive detectors were hung, this is a real miracle of modern technologies and one of the most grandiose scientific projects in history. The history of the epic construction site, full of breakthroughs and failures, is shown in the context of the rapid development of particles physics in the 20th century.
