For the first time, the book is proposed for the first translation into the Russian language of the writings of Agatarchid of Knidsky “On the Eritreic Sea” with historical and literary commentary, a comparative analysis of the ancient Greek manuscripts of the corps of the “small Greek geographers”, in which the “periper of the Erytrey Sea”, is given, the analysis of the origin of the manuscripts is preserved, As well as a new, refined translation of this source, reading and discusses the historical context of Latin inscriptions from North -West Arabia and from the southern part of the Red Sea (archipelago of Farasan), Greek and Indian - from the island of Sokotra, the connections of Sokotra with Rome and East Africa are reconstructed. An analysis of the origin of the concept of "Red Sea" is also proposed. Chronologically, the study is limited to the framework of the Hellenistic and Roman eras (the last quarter of the 4th century BC - IV century. E.).
