The painful marriage of the impeccable gentleman Christopher Titgens and the secular beauty of Sylvia balances on the verge of disaster when he meets the young suffrazhist Valentine. Having barely begun, the love story at first glance is interrupted by the leaving Christopher to the Western Front. In 2012, a series was shot by the novel, the main role in which was played by Benedict Cumberbatch. In Russian it is printed for the first time.
