Protopop Avvakum Petrov (1620–1682), an outstanding writer and religious figure of the 17th century, belongs to the number of the most striking figures of Russian history. The new book of the St. Petersburg writer, philosopher and historian Kirill Kozhurin is dedicated to the last, Pustozersky period of the life of Protopop Avvakum, as well as such a difficult issue as the reasons for the execution of the “Pustozersky four” (Protopop Avvakum and his sobsman deacon Theodore, the monk Epiphanius and the priest of Lazarus) in 1682).
Based on a variety of actual material, the author is trying to figure out the essence of the church conflict of the mid -17th century and find out the role and place in this conflict of Protopop Avvakum and its like -minded people.
