The book includes novels about service dogs - “Mukhtar” of Israel Metter and “faithful Ruslan” by Georgy Vladimov.
The prototype of Mukhtar was the legendary German shepherd Sultan, who served in the Leningrad police in the blocked and post -war years and took part in five thousand operations. The story of the tragic fate of Ruslan, the guard of shepherd, for a long time existed in an anonymous samizdat version and was attributed to Solzhenitsyn. The publication of the “faithful Ruslan” in the journal “Sowing” (1975) entailed the exclusion of the author from the Union of Writers of the USSR.
