For relatively short-lived life, the English captain James Cook (1728-1779) made so many discoveries and exploits that since that time and this time it is rightfully considered the most famous British sailor. In just ten and a half years (1768-1779), he circled the globe three times, opened hundreds of islands, and the pearl among them Hawaii, attached millions of square miles of new territories to the British empire (which is one Australia!).
