The former Jacob. Mann T.
The former Jacob is the first part of the monumental cycle “Joseph and his brothers”, from which Thomas Mann considered his best works. In an artistic interpretation of the Old Testament plot, he poses eternal questions about the life, origin of man and the search for God, thereby erasing the boundaries between the past and the present. The epic opens a detailed story about the difficult fate of Jacob. Having stole the birthright and the father’s blessing at the brother of Isav, he becomes an exile in his native land and finds a shelter in his uncle Lavan's house. Here, Jacob will have to go through the prepared tests with honor, knowing both joys and sorrows: to meet the love of her life by Rachel, to serve for her for long seven years, by the will of chance to take her sister as his wife, to give birth to twelve sons, one of which - Joseph - is destined will take a special place in biblical history...
