Alexander Belyaev (1884-1942) was a child with an unusually wide circle of interests. He constructed aircraft, photographed, played on musical instruments, played serious roles in the performances of the People’s Theater in his youth and studied Esperanto's language. He traveled and studied. His life was unusually saturated until a terrible disease laid him in six years in bed. He spent three of them in a corset. Having defeated the disease, he becomes a professional writer. And the first work that was printed was the story (later redesigned to the novel, which is published in this edition) “The head of Professor Dowel”. By his own admission of the author, this work is autobiographical - about how absolutely devoid of the ability to move can fight and overcome physical weakness. The book includes two more works by A. Belyaev - “Island of the dead ships” and “Eternal Bread”.
