Charles de Bonfire (1827–1879) - Belgian writer. Today is considered the founder of Franco-Belgian literature, although recognition came to it only more than 30 years after death. His main work - “The Legend of Ulenspiegel” - is placed on a par with books such as “Don Quixote” and “Gargantua and Pantagruel”. The famous “Legend of Ulenspiegel” describes the heroic page of Belgian history - the era of the Netherlands Revolution of the 16th century. and the struggle against foreign oppressors. The main character of the book is Til, nicknamed Ulenspiegel, a beloved character of folk traditions, indefatigable merry and Balagur, is gradually reborn into a persistent Göz and a fighter for the independence of his homeland, embodied in the national spirit of Flanders. In the Western European literature of the New Age, nothing of the kind has been created - nothing of the kind of this “legend” that amazes with its patriotic pathos and the spirit of genuine heroism.
