The life of David Copperfield, told by himself. Volume 1. Dickens Ch.
“The life of David Copperfield told by himself” is the only Roman of Charles Dickens in the genre of autobiographical prose. The story is based on the history of childhood and the youth of Dickens until 1836, the story of the adventures and ordeals of the boy, who will eventually become a writer. In English, this is the first “portrait of the artist”, and perhaps this is why David Copperfield became one of Leo Tolstoy’s most beloved novels. In 1852, in his diary, Tolstoy writes that the main character is “lovely”, in 1891 says that the novel makes a strong, “huge” impression, and in 1905 claims that it was this book that is the most ripe, “trimmed with »The author of the author. These estimates of Tolstoy completely reflect the general opinion of readers, since the novel has become one of the most popular works of Dickens both in the UK and in Russia.
The first volume includes chapters I-XXIX.
