The novel “The Little Mistress of the Big House” written a year before the author’s death is unusual for the writer’s work, who became famous for the works of the adventure genre. The plot is based on a love triangle here. The “little mistress” shocked Jack London's contemporaries with sexual frankness, but London himself considered this book his best work. Although the novel cannot be called autobiographical in the full sense, the events described in it echoes what was happening on the California ranch of Jack London and his wife Charmian in the winter of 1912 - early 1913.
