The collection includes various works of Ambrose Bears (1842–1914), who deservedly gained the glory of the master of Gothic prose in the United States. In his texts, gloomy and mystical, Birs tried to bring a description of the terrible to a possible limit. His story “Monk and daughter of the executioner” in the translation by I. Bernstein is a free retelling of the novel by the German writer R. Foss “Monk from Berchtesgaden”. In addition to the story, this publication included more than seven dozen short parables of Bears, as well as twenty -three writers' stories. The publication is accompanied by drawings and letters of the artist Tatyana Kosach.
