Suddenly orphaned Mary has to get used to a new life. She is sent to England, to an uncle, whose house hides many secrets. Nobody loves a nondescript and gloomy girl. She is very lonely. She finds out that in an old estate there is a garden where it is forbidden to enter. Mary constantly violates the rules, and the place surrounded by riddles, especially attracts it.
