The name of Rus'. Zabelin I.E.
Ivan Egorovich Zabelin (1820-1909)-idealist historian and archaeologist with a unique look at the Slavic, and in particular Russian history. His classical work “The History of Russian Life since ancient times” was first published in 1876 and 1879 in two volumes.
The first part of the first volume of Zabelin is included in our publication. It covers the issues of the formation of the Russian state in the era of the great resettlement of peoples. Based on data from linguistics and toponymy, the author polemizes with the Norman theory popular and still, suggesting that the birthplace called up for Rus' of the Varangians is not Scandinavia, but the mysterious island of Rügen, the cradle of the Baltic Slavs.
