This work is devoted to a number of key problems of Japanese phonetics: the main attention in it is paid to the review and analysis of research regarding the formation of the “sound shell” of the modern Japanese language, a detailed description of its segmented composition, accentuation and intonation. The book proposed to the attention of readers was made on the basis of theoretical works, methodological and educational materials, experimental-phonetic data obtained in independent experiments of the author or in the experiments of his students who worked under his leadership. The description is based on the principles of the St. Petersburg (Leningrad) phonetic school. The book also outlines promising areas of studying the sound system of the Japanese language.
