For the first time in Russian, an interesting historical source of the Thirty Years War (1618–1648), belonging to the pen of the outstanding French military engineer Cavalier Antoine de Villa (c. 1596 - c. 1656/57) and in detail considering the theory and practice of fortification of the new time is published , issues of political and economic management of a fortified city, the organization of the garrison service, as well as the strategy and tactics of the siege war. A contemporary and associate of the famous Cardinal Richelieu, Antoine de Vill took part in many military campaigns and sieges of his time, made a major contribution to the development of fortification science and military engineering thought as a whole, and some aspects of his literary and scientific heritage (for example, a treatise on Malaya War) has retained a certain relevance to the present day.
