A strange theft occurs in the mansion in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg-the unknown takes only 20 tiles of Flemish work, united by one topic: playing children. The owner of the house, a wealthy businessman, is in earnestly intrigued, and asks the investigator from Petrovka Maria Karavay, who brilliantly established himself in matters related to history and art, to engage in “particularly” this business. At the same time, fires flash almost simultaneously in Moscow: one in the chic Hotel Metropol, the other in the office on the Patriarchals. Two people who are in no way interconnected in the fire - a Dutch tourist and a metropolitan antiquary. And while the senior authorized Andrei Yakovlev is going on a burning trail that leads to the Ural prison, where Pyromaniac and mass killer, Maria Karavay, has been serving for many years, sets off in Bruges and Antwerp, investigating the circumstances of the life of the 16th century. None of them, however, came to mind that the secret of four -century prescription and modern deaths in the fire can be the links of the same chain...
