Having returned home after three years at the Australian gold mines, George Talboys finds out that his beautiful wife Helen died. Trying to cope with grief, George accepts the invitation of his friend Robert to visit the estate of his uncle, the rich and respectable Lord Odli, who recently married a young governess.
