For three hundred years, Russia has managed to turn dangerous steppe borders into part of the empire. The author describes the history of the region not only from the point of view of Moscow, he shows that the steppe peoples perceived Russia first as a subject of the state, then as an ally and, as a result, as dominant power. According to the author, the steady expansion of Russia in the southern and eastern lands turned Russia into a colonial empire, although the colonial nature of its power was persistently denied.
