The plot of the famous story of Boris Nikolayevich Polevoy (1908-1981) is a genuine story that happened with the military pilot Alexei Maresyev (in the book - Alexei Meresuev). He was shot down in an air battle, lost both legs, but at the cost of incredible efforts was able to return to duty and sit down again for the helm.

This story is not just about the feat.
