1914, Europe is on the verge of the First World War. Engineer Richard Hanney returns from Africa to the good old England, where he leads a measured bachelor life. Once, a certain neighbor Richard asks him for help, claiming that he was in a mortal danger, since he attacked the trail of a spy organization gathering to steal the military secrets of Great Britain. The bored Richard agrees to help the stranger and involuntarily turns out to be drawn into spy games. Soon, Richard begins to pursue not only foreign intelligence agents, but also the police - for the murder that he did not commit. Now the fate of the country depends on whether he will have time to solve the secret cipher and expose the insidious plan of enemies.
The work is written in the genre of the Spy thriller and filmed four times, including the famous Alfred Hitchcock.
