The book suggested to the reader introduces the reader to the sociological research of the theater, which unfolded in Russia during the stagnation and the subsequent period of the reforms that began. Although, according to the texts included in the publication, the studies unfolded in different regions, the Coordinating center of the new direction was the State Institute of Art of Assembly and, in particular, the Department of Sociology of Art and the Department for predicting the development and functioning of artistic culture. The book includes the works of authors specializing in sociological problems and representing various scientific groups. The subject of understanding in them is such issues as: the degree of communion of the population to various types of art, in particular to the theater, demographic, social, ubanization, socio-psychological and other factors of the theater’s visits, the theater in the structure of free population, the structure of the theater audience, and the interaction In the urban culture of traditional and technical types of art, the specifics of the perception and impact of the theater, the theater as a social institution, the place of theater as a means of communication in urban culture, the needs and requests of children's, adolescence and youth audience. Many articles discuss the methodological, theoretical and methodological aspects of the sociological research of the theater, affect the issues of interdisciplinary cooperation in the study of the theater and its audience, as well as the historical aspects of the theater’s functioning and the processes of its massive reception.
