“This is madness”, which received the subtitle “The first truthful of the ever written novels about love”, Theodor Dreizer considered his most significant and personal work.

As the author himself admitted, in his life a romantic relationship Always played a paramount role. They tinted him, excited the thought and strengthened the spirit. It is not surprising that the Dreiser’s love life was extremely saturated: he divorced his wife, regularly changed his mistresses and cheated even a constant life partner.

It was the memories of several brightest relationships in the life of the Dreiser that formed the basis of the novel. “This madness” was published in parts on the pages of the Hurst International magazine from February to July 1929. The writer planned to include several more essays in the text, but never returned to this topic.
