In January 1903, L. N. Tolstoy was seriously ill and could not be given to the usual work. The calendar located in his bedroom with the sayings of various sages inspired him to make his own book, where the lips of the Great would speak of the most important truths for man. This included the chosen statements of thinkers of different eras: epictate, diogenes, Mark Aurelius, Socrates, Confucius, Buddha, Aristotle, Pascal, Rousseau, Spinoza, Kant, Schiller, Schopenhauer, Voltaire, Tekker, Dostoevsky.
