In 1839, a young Greek teacher secretly came to Optina Deserts and remained permanent residence. Despite the poor health, he worked hard on the translation and publication of the ascetic creations of the Holy Fathers, as well as his own theological works. In 1846 he was ordained a hieromonk, and after 14 years he was elected the elder of the monastery. “Bringing this responsible and difficult monastic feat,” writes S. N.
