“Unclean, unknown and godfather” was first published after the death of Sergei Vasilyevich, in 1903, the author collected the material for the book for many years during his hiking in the country in search of interesting ethnographic material.

The book plunges the reader into the mysterious world of beliefs, rites and holidays of the Russian peasantry; into a world inhabited by beautiful and cruel mermaids, capricious spirits and cruel werewolves; into a world that is not touched either by education or progress in which Christianity is in the most bizarre way intertwine with the remnants of paganism.
