Under the cover of the night. Gaskell E.
The English writer Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865), along with Dickens, Tekkeerey and Charlotte Bronte, belongs to the bright galaxy of the famous novelists of the Victorian era, and its works are recognized as master of world classics. Among them are the novels “Mary Barton”, “Kranford”, “North and South”, “Wives and Daughters” and others. The novel “Under the Open of the Night” (1863) is published in Russian for the first time. The action takes place in the provincial town of a small English county, against the backdrop of a panoramic image of Victorian customs and social prejudices of the past. Thin psychologism is combined with an exciting plot, the spring of which is the unconductive murder committed in the heat of anger and fatally influenced the fate of the main characters - their life turns into the arena of the eternal conflict of love and reason, loyalty and betrayal, good and evil.
