The book of the young Canadian researcher Bill Ridings (1960-1994), who was completed by him shortly before his death, is an attempt to critical philosophical understanding of the history of the university in the Western world and its role in the modern era. The idea of the university went a large historical path: from the idea of the mind (with Kant) through the idea of culture (among German idealists) to the current idea of perfection or quality. But today the university turned out to be “in ruins”, since none of the historical ideas can serve as the foundation of its existence. The book is addressed to a wide range of readers.
