The outstanding Danish Slavist Adolf Stoder-Petersen (1893–1963) is widely known for the studies of Russian literature and the Old Russian language, but first of all, historical and philological surveys dedicated to the Russian-Candinavian relations of the 9th-11th centuries. In this volume, his most important publications on this topic are collected, which have never previously been translated into Russian. The most important and not having lost its scientific significance is his monograph “Varangian traditions as a source of“ Tale of Bygone Years ”, in which the question of the cultural interaction of Byzantium, Rus' and Scandinavia based on the transference of military legends was first raised. The etymology of the designations of the Scandinavians in ancient Russian sources (articles dedicated to the names of Rus', Varangian, Kolbyag) were considered by the author in a wide historical and cultural context, taking into account the evolution of their meanings. On the history of ancient Rus' and Russian-Scandinavian relations of the Vikings era, but also for folklorists, mediaists and culturalists, as well as for all readers interested in early history and culture of medieval Europe.
