Vasily Grigoryevich Perov in the history of Russian painting remained as the author of genre paintings, in which there were people's lives. Perova called the heir to the critical realism of Pavel Fedotov. One of the active organizers of the partnership of mobile art exhibitions, he did a lot in this public field. The hard, satirical look of the “singer of sorrow”, as he was sometimes called, was explained to the world simply: the artist wanted to convey his understanding of high morality to the audience. One of the contemporaries, analyzing the diverse work of V.G. Perova, wrote that the artist is characterized by “a constant desire for life truth, full of painful doubt, and sometimes severe disappointment.”
