“Vasily Terkin” is a real front -line poem written by military commissar Alexander Tvardovsky right on the front line. In Terkin, the main features of a Russian national character were embodied: courage and good nature, ingenuity and recklessness, dedication and economicness. Ordinary and officers saw in the main character not a fictional character, but a combat comrade. Former front -line soldiers recalled that they met Terkin in the war, and wrote about this to Tvardovsky. Part of the letters entered the real edition. The poem was not just popular, it has become an integral part of the front -line life, and thanks to the fabulous style it is easily read today.

Terkin’s textbook image of Orest Vereisky became. A simple and such native face, a look with a squint, a stocky figure and an unnecessary thirst for life, through in all the appearance of the main character, made him the most recognizable literary character of the Great Patriotic War.
