The stories of the submariners proposed by the reader, collected by the former submarine commander Karl Neureuter and the famous German artist Klaus Bergen, first saw the light in 1930 and were immediately translated into English. During the First World War, Klaus Bergen personally took part in a combat campaign on the U-53 submarine under the command of the legendary Hans Rose.
