We have never been a middle class. How social mobility misleads us. Weiss H.
Although the reduction in the middle class in one part of the planet and its expansion in another attracts our attention, we rarely question the category of “middle class” itself. In this book, Anthropologist Hadas Weiss claims that the middle class is a kind of ideology. Clearing it from the origins and up to the era of financialization, the author demonstrates the fallacy that our position in society can improve or deteriorate only thanks to our ambitious and prudent investments in property and education. Ethnographic data from Germany, Israel, the USA and other countries show how in private life and in politics this faith makes us strive to achieve the goals that contribute to the accumulation, but at the same time turn out to be self -destructive.
