Victor Hugo (1802-1885) is known to the Russian reader primarily as the author of the novels “Cathedral of the Parisian Mother of God”, “outcast”, “ninety -third year” and others. But the role of Hugo in the cultural, social and political history of the XIX century - and and Not only France, but throughout Europe, is incomparably wider.
